“Everybody believes it, so it must be true.”
This single line has done more harm than good.
Our world is full of beliefs that get passed down like family heirlooms, repeated, recycled, and rarely questioned. But once you look deeper, many of them are simply... not true.
Let’s break down five of the most common beliefs people still hold and the truth behind them that might actually set you free.
1.“Follow your passion and the money will come.”
It sounds poetic. We’re told in movies and motivational videos that doing what we love will naturally lead to success and fulfillment.
Why it’s false:
Passion is great, but it’s not always profitable. Most successful people didn’t just follow their passion blindly. They built skills, solved real problems, and adapted to what the world needed. Passion without value creation is just a hobby.
2.“You must be in a relationship to be truly happy.”
Movies, society, and even family push the idea that love = happiness. If you’re single, something must be missing. Why it’s false:
Plenty of people in relationships are miserable. And plenty of people who are single live deeply fulfilling lives. Your happiness isn’t dependent on another person. It’s rooted in how you relate to yourself.
3.“You can Spot-Reduce Fat from Specific Areas.”
Everyone wants a flatter belly, leaner arms, or toned thighs, so it feels logical to just target that area with exercises. Why it’s false:
The body doesn’t burn fat selectively. You lose fat overall, based on genetics, diet, and total activity level, not where you do the most crunches or squats.
4.“Credit Cards are always Bad.”
Credit cards are often blamed for financial problems, debt, overspending, and interest traps. And it’s true: used wrong, they can wreck your finances.
But that doesn’t mean they’re inherently bad. That’s like saying cars are bad because of accidents.
Why it’s false:
Credit cards themselves aren’t bad, it's how you use them that matters. When managed responsibly, credit cards can help build your credit score, provide valuable rewards, and offer fraud protection. The myth that credit cards are always bad ignores these benefits and paints an incomplete picture. Problems arise only when people overspend, carry balances, or miss payments, not from the cards themselves.
5.“Meditation Means Emptying Your Mind Completely.”
Most people think meditation means sitting quietly and forcing your brain to be a blank slate, zero thoughts, zero distractions, total emptiness.
If you’ve ever tried it, you know how frustrating that feels. So why does this myth persist? And what is meditation really about?
Why it’s false:
Meditation is about awareness and acceptance, not blankness. It’s training your mind to:
-
Notice thoughts without judgment
-
Return focus gently to your breath, a mantra, or a sensation
-
Build presence and calmness amid mental noise
It’s a practice of observing your mind rather than controlling or emptying it.
